An assigned article, “Eat Bulaga! A Record to Match” (pp. 14-15), which I wrote about the Philippines’ longest-running noontime show, Eat Bulaga! and the undisputable trio behind its success, Tito, Vic and Joey. Indeed, a record that will be very difficult to equal, 32 years of airing when I wrote the article for Atlas TV Guide May 2011 issue, and 38 years as of this posting.

Darna! The Evolution of a Superheroine

This article, “Darna! The Evolution of a Superheroine” (pp. 14-15) was written barely a month after the hit GMA 7 television series Darna, which starred Angel Locsin. Had the publisher and editor used a Darna/Angel Locsin cover instead of the one above like what I suggested, the magazine would have sold like hotcakes. The “chair,” a simple piece of furniture can be an interesting source of fascination. Think that the mere resting place of man’s buttocks – the salumpuwit in Tagalog – could become the “Seat of (his) Power” (pp. 46, 47, 49). The sidebar “Did Ferdinand Magellan Really Bring the First Chair to the Philippines?” (p. 51) is equally enlightening.

Before the prevalence of trivia books and quiz contests, a few of us freelance writers like Ramon Lorenzo and Selwyn Clyde Alojipan used to contribute compediums of trivia and interesting information of just about anything under the sun to magazines like MOD.

 Also in this issue is a poem I wrote for Ms. Hilda Constantino, the “soulmate” that I found and lost.

Upon reading from the newspaper that the Ifugao Rice Terraces are endangered of massive degradation, I immediately did some research and wrote the article “The Ifugao Rice Terraces: Saving a Wonder of the World” (pp. 8-9), which was published as Celebrity World May 8, 1995 issue’s “Topic of the Week.” I re-wrote this article and it was published in two parts in Mr. & Ms. March 18 & 25, 1997 issues.
