This article, “The Philippines: Land of Earthquakes” is actually an updated excerpt of the 3-Part Special Features article I wrote for MOD Filipina (October 4 to 18, 1991), “The Philippines: Land of Earthquakes and Volcanos” for which I won my first Science & Technology Journalism Award given by the Philippine Press Institute.

          French actress Sophie Marceau (real name Sophie Danièle Sylvie Morisset Maupu) made her film debut in La Boum (1980) at age 13. After starring in 15 French films, she made her first English-language movie opposite Mel Gibson in the Academy Award-winning Braveheart (1995), and became an international film star playing the role of Elektra King in the 19th James Bond film The World is Not Enough (1999) opposite Pierce Brosnan.

1869 – Carlos de la Torre became governor-general of the Philippines. He introduced the ideas of liberalism to the Filipinos.

1988 – The Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program took effect. The program despite much publicity, however, did very little to emancipate the Filipino farmers from the bondage of the soil.

Alam niyo ba kung papano siya napasok sa showbix? Noong siya ay 19-taong-gulang, nakilala niya si Pauleen Luna, na noon ay talent pa ng ABS-CBN Channel 2.
